He has the most unusual eyes I've ever seen. I think they're gray, but they seem to change color based on what he's wearing, the color of the wall, the lighting ... even his mood, sometimes; I've seen them look gray or green or gold or blue or even dark, dark brown--like Jack's. That's what color they were when Kim Brody walked out of court with her escort of federal agents. I wanted to take him out for a drink then and there, because he was so upset that she'd gotten away with murder, but he didn't give me a chance--he just shook his head and walked away, and by the time I got back to the office, he'd disappeared....

I'm getting ahead of myself.

The first time I walked into his office, I could tell that a crush was forthcoming. I'd seen it plenty of times before. I wasn't sure he was someone I wanted to be involved with; not only was he my boss, he also has a ... well, a macabre streak.

Oh, like you haven't noticed the picture on his wall. The one of a dead body. And that chunk of concrete with the broken steel bar stuck through it? It's a memento from a case he lost.

But I'm getting ahead of myself again.

I sort of took advantage of his instant infatuation to protect myself. Having worked with Jack for over a year, I knew that he had his own, somewhat ... unique ... set of ethics, and that it would take a little time for this new guy to figure them out. So I made him promise not to take his frustrations with Jack out on me. It was self-preservation, really.

Well, okay. There was a fair amount of loyalty to Jack in there, too.

I didn't see the puppy-love look again for a couple of months, until we were in the middle of that mess with Kim Brody. I knew I was going to have to prove to the judge that people change, so I asked my mother for a copy of that picture of me as a sophomore. (I always hated that picture. I was short and a little pudgy and, of course, broke out all over my face the day before the picture was taken ... and it's a bad picture on top of all that.) Mike took one look at it and said something about standing a chance with me then, but I was preoccupied with the fact that opposing counsel--Peter Berbatov--was wearing one man's sock and one woman's sock. The meaning of what he'd said didn't really sink in until later.

And by that time, he was in a very bad mood. But I already told you about that.

Connie

He was really cute that first time he asked me out to dinner. He has that lisp--you've noticed that, right? He's kind of self-conscious about it, but I think it's just ... well, cute. It makes him sound like a little boy.

So ... dinner. We agreed to Saturday night, since weeknights are invariably eaten up by work and the idea was to make it a date. No shop-talk allowed.

Thankfully, Catherine Waxman pled out that Thursday, or I might have asked him about his cross of Dr. Olivet. I was tempted anyway. I'm pretty sure Jack must've given him a head's-up about the affair she had with a patient. As it was, he was happy with himself that weekend: Vargas virtually admitted guilt by trying to commit suicide, the motion to re-present the Rodchenko case to the Grand Jury was successful, Waxman pled out, and Jack had convinced SavingsMart to dump Cahill. So, all in all, it had been a good end to the week.

Good thing, too. Mike can be ... a little moody when things don't go his way.

So. Saturday. First date. I will admit that I spent the day pampering myself with a visit to my favorite day spa. Massage, facial, manicure/pedicure, the works.

It paid off, too, judging from Mike's reaction.

Where'd we go? We went to that Pacific Rim fusion place--yeah, that one--and then we went to see Sweeney Todd.

I told you, he has a macabre streak.

I don't think I've ever had a man kiss my hand before ... he's such a sweetie. And he looked up at me when he did that, too, and his eyes were this clear, bright shade of aquamarine....

Huh? Oh. Afterwards. He left. But we had dinner on Monday night, and it ... wasn't strictly a working dinner, and the same thing on Tuesday, and on Wednesday.

It was impossible to keep pretending that I wasn't attracted to him. When he suggested another date on Saturday, I agreed immediately--on the condition that it wasn't Sweeney Todd again.

He grinned at me when I said that.

He's a vegetarian. I didn't pick up on that during our first date, but I sure did this time--of course, it is hard to order pizza with a vegetarian without realizing that they are one ... he said I kicked his butt? Oh. At bowling. I did. Probably because I kept texting him when he was trying to bowl--no, it wasn't cheating. It wouldn't have had any effect if he didn't have that stupid BlackBerry permanently grafted to his hand.

Afterwards. Afterwards, we went for a walk around the Lake, and it was really beautiful--and very romantic: the moon was almost full, and it was reflected in the water ... I love walking in the Park. It's so easy to forget that you're in the middle of a massive city.

Mike was attentive and affectionate, and he seemed genuinely interested in the stories I told him about my family--like the time my mother, who really is a very good cook, decided to try to mix beets into her enchilada sauce, because it was the only way she could think of to get my sister and me to eat them. Suffice to say, it didn't work--and we managed to stain most of the kitchen red as a result.

She gave up on beets after that.

When he looked at me after that story ... I knew, and I think he did, too. He tried to fight it--I think he was trying to be a gentleman--but it was like ... trying to fight gravity.

Oh, yes. It was definitely a force of nature. Nothing else can be that powerful.

How did it feel? You mean, you want me to kiss and tell? ... okay, okay, I'll stop.

It felt--it felt ... perfect. I've been on the receiving end of many, many bad kisses--usually from men who think they're God's gift--and Mike wasn't like that. He ... well ... I almost said he took me in his arms, but that isn't what happened. We just ... came together. And that connection--I'm not talking just the physical connection, here, though that was definitely very nice--was just ... well, it felt so right, and so perfect.

Even when we ... broke apart, neither of us wanted to let go. He closed his eyes and leaned against me, almost like we were dancing. I suggested that we take it back to my apartment, so we shared a cab ... he walked me to my door and kissed me goodnight.

And then he left.

God, I wanted him to stay ... I mean, I appreciate that he was trying not to push me into sleeping with him, but I ... wanted him to stay.

He came in this time. I didn't think he would--he'd been so shy about it. But this time, he did ... the date? We went to Bella Flora and talked. No, just talked, and ate good Italian food and drank pretty decent wine.

No, he wasn't drunk.

No, I wasn't either!

Do you want to know what happened, or not? Because I can stop talking right now....

Thank you. As I was saying, he walked me to my door--again--and kissed me goodnight. I asked him to come in. It was pretty clear he wanted to, but it was equally clear that he didn't want to push me into anything. So I did the pushing--or ... pulling, as the case may be. I took his hand and led him inside.

We started kissing again as soon as the door was safely closed and locked behind us. And ... just as an aside, it's nice to be with a man who isn't intimidated by my height ... no, I'm taller. Just by an inch or something. I'm not even completely convinced that he's noticed that. He probably chalks it up to my wearing heels.

So. We started kissing. And it felt just as ... electric, just as--as right, as perfect ... as the first time. I very quickly had my arms around him, inside his jacket--I wanted that jacket off. He managed to oblige me without putting any distance between us ... and I took his tie off. He tried to put on the brakes when he put together what I was doing.

So I unbuttoned the top three buttons on his shirt and pulled him by his lapels through my apartment. I knew what I wanted, and I wasn't going to let him leave me frustrated this time.

Oh ... his body ... that nice, slender body of his ... apparently, all the pacing he does--and the visits to the batting cage--keeps him in good shape: his shoulders are well-muscled and narrow nicely into that trim waist. And that light dusting of chest hair is just perfect. And his ass is cute as hell.

Once we got back to my bedroom, I finished taking his shirt off of him and dropped it on the floor before stepping back to admire what had been revealed. And I definitely liked what I was seeing. He smiled at me and said my name in that low, sexy voice he uses when he wants something:

"Connie."

So I did the only thing that made sense at the time: I took off my heels and my blouse and my skirt and stepped forward again to kiss him. I could clearly feel his arousal through his trousers. I had my arms around his neck, and he had his around my waist, and we were pressed together as tightly as we could get ... and it wasn't tightly enough.

"Mike," I whispered in his ear. "Let's get rid of some of these clothes."

I felt him smile, and he stepped back a little to kick his shoes off. He didn't even bother untying them. A moment later, his pants and boxers joined the pile of clothes on the floor.

My breath caught in my throat at the first sight of his fully-naked body. His erection stood proudly before him, twitching a little with the beat of his heart. I reached forward and caressed it and his head went back, eyes closed.

"Connie," he said again, and this time, he sounded ragged. He was already close, and I'd only just touched him. I retreated and slid my thumbs under the waistband of my panties.

"Connie," he whispered a third time, now sounding stressed. I smiled seductively and rolled off of him, reaching across to the box that was in the drawer in my nightstand and pulling out a small package.

"It's all right," I whispered back, tearing it open. "I've got you covered."
