"Most decisions are seat-of-the-pants judgments. You can create a rationale for anything. In the end, most decisions are based on intuition and
faith." Nathan Myhrvold
"Intuition and Faith"
Half-irritated, half-amused, Jack McCoy wandered over in the direction of the couch and stared out the window. Arthur Branch had called him into his office and proceeded to ignore him, choosing instead to finish whatever the hell it was he'd been working on.
"All right." Finally looking up, Branch took a second to locate his subordinate. "Jack?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm putting together an exploratory committee to run for the Senate."
"Okay and?"
"I'm putting you up for interim DA."
McCoy turned and examined Branch's expression, his own guarded. "What if I say I don't want it?"
"That's your choice to make," Branch conceded. "But if you say no, I'm gonna suggest Judge Petrovsky."
A muscle in McCoy's jaw twitched. "Will you really?" he asked. "Or are you saying that to get me to say yes?"
Branch gave him an innocent look. "Would I do that to you?"
McCoy exhaled. "Is this what you meant when you saidwhat was it?that one day, your chair would be empty?"
Branch nodded. "I've been thinking about doin' this for a while, now. Thought I ought to give you a little warning."
"Cryptic though it was." They stared at each other for a long moment. "Let me think about it," McCoy said eventually.
"Fine. I just need an answer by the end of the week."
