Ellen McCoy leaned on one elbow in bed, staring into the dimlight of her bedroom. Jack's voice, barely recognizeable through layers of grief and alcohol, had shocked her into wakefulness; now, she was numb.

She hung up the receiver, and sat up in bed, reaching for her robe. She wondered if she should wake the girls up and tell them.

Of course she should. She had to tell them-Jack was in no shape to do it, even though he said he was on his way over....

The view from this office of mine, is not that much differant than the view from the office I had for so many years, just across the hall.
I remember the noise, like so many. A distant whine, that caught my attention, that later I realized, must have been the sound of jet engines. Then...it wasn't a thump, or a bang, or a roar. It was alll three combined, into one all encompansing cataclysm that shook Hogan Place.

I don't know what I am doing here. I remember, being elected class president at St Ignatius, thinking that I was the luckiest kid around. Then, treasurer of my class at NYU, and chairman of the concert committee. Thinking, life didn 't get any better.

Here I am, waiting to find out if I'm going to continue as DA.

Jack McCoy subconsciously kneaded his thigh as he frowned at the report in front of him. Giving up, he let his gaze wander to the window across the DA's-- no, it's mine now--office.

It still didn't feel right.

He glanced at the door that lead across the hall to the office he still thougt of as his. Why in hell did I agree to this?
